We get only 200MW daily – BEDC blames TCN for epileptic electricity supply

Benin Electricity Distribution Companies, BEDC, says it gets only about 200 and 290 megawatts of electricity daily from the national grid, controlled by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN.

According to NAN, the acting Managing Director of BEDC, Evelyn Gbiwen, disclosed this on Tuesday while reacting to the persistent drop in electricity supply within the company’s franchise area.

Gbiwen noted that the load allocation to BEDC has been insufficient, hence the drop in power supply.

She stressed that the load allocation cannot sufficiently serve Benin City alone, not to talk of Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states.

According to her, the BEDC needs at least 1000MW to serve its customers better.

”The load allocation given to Benin Disco is so little that it is insufficient to go around everybody.

“We have been trying as much as possible to wheel power to areas with these nightclubs, hotels and other businesses, but we have limited power allocated to BEDC.

“Majorly, the problem is from the grid. If they allocate about 1000MW to us, it won’t even be enough; talk more of now that they allocate between 200MW and 290MW of power to us.

“The 200MW is not enough for only Benin; talk more about Delta Ondo and Ekiti,” Gbiwen said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, described discos as the quickest link in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

He had threatened to revoke the license of non-performing and erring discos.
